Updated: Mar 19, 2020

About This Game Bright lights flare across the night sky. The wind rages outside the thin walls of your wooden cabin. A wolf howls in the distance. You look at the meagre supplies in your pack, and wish for the days before the power mysteriously went out. How much longer will you survive?Welcome to THE LONG DARK, the innovative exploration-survival experience Wired magazine calls "the pinnacle of an entire genre".The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster. The episodic story-mode for The Long Dark, WINTERMUTE, includes two of the five episodes that form its Season One. Both episodes were given a complete overhaul in December 2018, as part of the Redux Update: new mission structure, story beats, dialogue, animations etc.EPISODE ONE - “Do Not Go Gentle”Bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated after their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious flash of light in the sky. Struggling to survive as he desperately searches for Astrid, Mackenzie comes across the small town of Milton, where he begins to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse.EPISODE TWO - “Luminance Fugue”Mackenzie’s search for Astrid takes him deeper into the savage Winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid, but can he be trusted? The first two episodes of WINTERMUTE represent approximately 15 hours of gameplay. Episodes Three to Five are included in the price of the game, and will be unlocked for free as they are released.Features performances by Jennifer Hale, Mark Meer, David Hayter, and Elias Toufexis (Episode Three), and the music of Cris Velasco.Survival Mode is the free-form, non-narrative survival sandbox that has been honed over nearly three years in Early Access. Survival is your only goal, and death your only end. Make your own survival story with every game.NO HAND HOLDINGThe game challenges players to think for themselves by providing the information but never the answers. You have to earn the right to survive.PERMADEATHWhen you die in Survival Mode, your save is deleted. Every decision matters. Out of all the survival games I have played this one's the best. Each chapter correlates to past chapters, creating an even flow. The story line is really intriguing too. Like any game, it sometimes get frustrating, but overall it's great. Totally recommend it!. So to talk about the game, first we gotta hand it to game the good parts they did. When you start to play the game it feels very immersive, have a beautiful atmosphere, very detailed mechanics etc. Everything feels nice and polished, you feel the urge to explore more, do new things and get the know the game. There is a story or the exploration gamemodes ofc. So you can do whatever you want and play however you want. That is the dream right?BUT, here is the problem. Game designed to be on a illogical dynamics to keep you in a constant grinding so you have to play for long hours. Game offers you very feeble content and you start to face it after many hours of grinding. The things that you have found in first few hours are the %95 of the content. After 10 hours you ask yourself "What the hell am I doing?" and there is nothing to answer this. The magic of those few hours suddenly vanishes into thin air and leave you a this bland visual grinding. Every story you have is basically "I'm damaged need something to fix it moment". Ofc when this happens first time, you have the adrenaline rush, and maybe the second time and the third time. But after that you start to feel little bit tiring. But it doesn't stop there same thing happens more and more and more and more up to a point you feel this is it, this is the game. Game just a dark sinkhole with nothing to really do.You literally play games to clear your mind from the real life's constant grinding and the game expects you to the same thing with a feeble content. Remember FarCry 3 quote about the madness? This is the game version of it.. I keep coming back to this game. It's still being developed but it's a refreshingly challenging survival game that has NO ZOMBIES.. this is the most immersive survival game i have ever played story is good too even though it take a long dark for a episode to come out :). The Long Dark is the gold standard by which every other survival game would aspire to be. The player navigates endlessly from quiet and calm isolation to moments of sheer terror and survival. The threat of death to cold, hunger, and wild animals is always in the back of your mind (and sometimes much closer). Yet even as your character struggles there is a peace about the game that brings players to grips with the one true enemy - yourself. One misstep could literally be the beginning of the end in a series of rapidly unfolding events but the reward of each successful step forward is a victory against the unrelenting cold, unending hunger, and thirst which seeks to deprive you of your sanity.Winning is not an achievement. Winning is simply surviving.. So Far So Good :D. the dark souls of walking simulators. The long dark. A title that perfectly describes its journey through early access. This game bleeds atmosphere. Its tremendously easy to get immersed in the world. The environment is cold, and tense, and the tone is melancholy. Surviving It feels stressful and dangerous, like a survival game should. Unfortunately, the game mechanics make the game more annoying than challenging. Surviving the cold is not a challenge at all. Finding wood or food isn’t really a challenge. Keeping warm isn’t really a challenge. Keeping your gear in good repair isn’t much a challenge either. The fact that the game is set in a frigid post-apocalyptic Canadian tundra makes for wonderful aesthetic but provides nearly no challenge whatsoeverSomewhere along the lines the developers must have figured this out, and that is when they decided to add wolves and bears. The difficulty in this game comes from predators. Full stop. The first thing you may notice (especially if you have any wilderness training) is that the wolves and the bears don’t act like wolves and bears should. They roam around like World of Warcraft mobs waiting for a player character to agro them. We are expected to believe that a huge geological event (or something) causes them to be overly aggressive because “reasons”. They are usually where you don’t want them to be, and they beeline right for you as soon as they see you. There are ways to can get rid of them (shooting them in the face is my favorite), but unequivocally, the predators make up the bulk of the difficulty curve in this game. You will spend most of your time in this game running from predators while you make your way from one shelter to the next, where you will spend the next little while managing an assortment health bars until you are pressed out into the cold to go find more resources. Once the salvageable supplies run out, there is a system to hunt/gather/craft, but that gets boring fairly quickly. It’s a good thing the immersion is fantastic in this game, because the game mechanics themselves are lackluster. The game is riddled with wonderful ambient sound effects, and artistic game design, which initially will pull you in to this icy hellscape. But once all that wears off, and you start seeing the game mechanics without the pretty veneer, you will start asking yourself: “Why am I doing this?” That brings me to story mode. I have a theory that the developers contracted the story out to George R.R. Martin. As a result, we may never see it actually finished. Maybe HBO will take it over.In the mean time, buy this game on sale. It is highly polished sizzle on a mediocre steak. It’s probably worth a few bucks.. Tedious.I picked this up a couple years ago in early access, figured it could only get better with time. Now, it's doomed to haunt my game library for all time, mocking me along with my other ghostly investments. It hit me all at once as I was trudging through the story mode, juggling my over piled inventory and cursing myself for not opting a higher difficulty before investing too much time to start over. Now, I realize the above reason is my own fault, and I'm not holding it against this game at all. In a lot of ways, this game does some stuff right and nails some of the stuff its going after. However, getting it right doesn't necessarily translate to fun. There's a lot of positive reviews out there, a lot with low time investment, and even my own is fairly scant to start criticizing, but I'm going to go ahead and do it anyway.Pros:-Unique: No zombies, cannibals, aliens or other beasties; just you against the Canadian wilderness where only deer, wolves, rabbits and maybe one or two bears exist.-You can scavenge a bunch of goodies from houses, Including several different brands and flavors of soda (Unlike The Forest which only had orange... why is all this orange soda washing up on the beach? Where is it all coming from? Why can't cannibals climb ropes?). Variety's always a plus during the apocalypse-You can wear a total of 4 shirts and 4 pairs of pants to try and keep yourself warm... two pairs of socks and two hats, or scarves, if you're into that (Oddly, only one pair of gloves though).Cons:-Maybe my biggest qualm with this game is how sloooow everything moves. Without proper fuel, just lighting a fire takes something like 10 or 15 seconds, and its cold out there so you light a lot of fires.-Walking is slow, getting around is slow, opening drawers is slow, conversations are slow, cooking is slow; I get the desire for realism, but this game lays it on a little thick.-On normal difficulty, as I learned, this game becomes a winter walking sim where you loot one bedroom houses, sprain your ankles from all the loot you're carrying and chug toilet water whilst occasionally scaring off wolves with flares. Literally.-The story, at least what I saw of it, felt pretty generic; your classic 'Guy Crashes his Pontoon Plane into the Canadian Wilderness trying to Appease his Icy Ex-Wife' skit again.Really, the biggest thing that's missing here, and someone in another review already pointed this out as well, is that this game doesn't have a really strong sense of progression a lot of the good survival games have. Honestly, it just becomes tedious hours of monitoring various bars and pausing what you're doing to sate them, sometimes for long periods if you're freezing and in a bad spot. That sense of accomplishment I get from these kinds of games was missing for me here, that satisfaction of doing things well and becoming stronger. I can't really express where and how, exactly, this went amiss, because I don't really know myself, just that it did in my own opinion. If you can get this game right now for the $7 or so when its on sale, grab it, because it is certainly well worth that much at least. What it does right, it does well, and there is easily entertainment value to be had here... just not $30 worth.
